Well, the Christopher Handley case was resolved recently, he got a six-month sentence plus a mess of probation.
As I’ve said before, I don’t think a person should be prosecuted just for being creepy. But it seems, according to one report, Handley was dealing with material that current law could judge as obscene:
The offending material [...]

Indy bands and self-published comics
October 15th, 2009 · No Comments
The interesting thing about being in two different publishing worlds – comics and mysteries – is the times when one world’s opinions don’t exactly translate to the other.
That’s the case with self-publishing.
In the mystery field, quite understandably, self-publishing is not well thought of. There’s a lot of reasons for this: You can’t get the books [...]

STBU and events updated
June 15th, 2009 · No Comments
I had a great time at Printer’s Row last week but between that, fighting off a cold and taking some time off to spend with my daughters on their last day of seventh grade – well, I took a week off from the web.
But I’m back, and I’ve got new events listed on the events [...]

Creepy guys, comics, kiddie porn and the first amendment
May 25th, 2009 · 8 Comments
UPDATE: I clarified this over at mangablog but for some reason my post was removed. I am not arguing that Handley is a creepy guy. I am saying he put himself in the position of being judged one. That’s just the reality of the situation, and unfortunately that reality could include criminal prosecution right now. [...]

I would do a GREAT Dick Tracy strip
March 28th, 2009 · 1 Comment
Well, there’s a new artist working on the Dick Tracy strip. Dick Locher is still writing it, and although I wish the new guy well it doesn’t seem to be signaling much in a change of direction for the strip. (And I certainly didn’t hear a call for submissions)
Again, not directed at the new guy, [...]

I don’t what to say to Tom Spurgeon
The two great hopes for future reform don’t exactly encourage. That an entire generation of creators just now moving into their 60s may as a group be so spectacularly ill-prepared for the financial realities of old age that it somehow shames a movie- and licensing-wealthy industry into offering, [...]

Shorter Clay Shirky: I’m clueless, but that’s OK
March 15th, 2009 · 1 Comment
Seriously, he spent a few thousand words in his latest post saying that he has no idea what will happen to news if newspapers go away. And rationalizes that it’s OK that he doesn’t know, that it’s not his responsibility to know.
I’m not sure why so many people are listening to a guy who can’t [...]

Morgan Wick isn’t able to read my post over at Webcomics.com, but that doesn’t stop him from commenting on it – always a bad move.
Speaking generally about long-form webcomics, I mentioned that they generally have fewer readers than shortform or gag cartoons. I’m not interested in debating this point, but generally think it’s true. Speaking [...]
